England – Chapter Nine

Thomas Timpson 1823 – 1910 (TE3)

Thomas grew up with his sisters and brothers and when he was old enough found employment as an Agricultural Labourer in and around Kings Cliffe and Apethorpe. Appearing there in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

On 18 August 1853 in St Leonards Church, Apethorpe Thomas married Mary Mabbutt. Although resident there Mary was originally from Northampton All Saints, Northamptonshire, born in 1820 the daughter of Thomas Mabbutt a Publican.

Not long after their marriage the couple moved to Weston Hills, Lincolnshire, England where they settled. Through the 1861 to 1881 censuses Thomas is described as an Agricultural Labourer. In the 1891 census he is described as a Road Labourer.

The death of his wife Mary was registered in the July Qtr of 1895.

Thomas appears in the 1901 census living as a widower in Whaplode, Lincolnshire, England and is described as “living on his own means” which means he had sufficient money not to be on parish relief.  His death registration is recorded in the March Qtr of 1910.

The Children of Thomas and Mary Timpson née Mabbutt, all born in Weston Hills, Lincolnshire.

Thomas Timpson (TM1)

Their first child was born on 25 July 1854.

Thomas Timpson married Elizabeth Wright on 18 August 1875 at Whaplode, Lincolnshire, England.

According to the 1911 census the couple had nine Timpson children as listed below with probable year of birth;

Mary Ann 1875, Abraham 1876, Elizabeth 1877, Thomas 1880, Herbert 1881, Walter 1883, Ethel 1886, Albert 1887 and Richard Arthur 1888.

Sarah Ann Timpson (TM2)

Their second child was born 8 January 1857.

Sarah Ann Timpson married William Faulkner in 1879 in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England.

According to the 1911 census the couple had ten Faulkner children as listed below with probable year of birth.

Hannah Mary 1880, William James 1881, Ada Rose 1883, Arthur Edward 1884, Frank Thomas 1886, George Albert 1888, Emily Florence 1890, Harold David 1892, Jessie Mabel 1893, and Alec Joseph 1896.

Ann Timpson (TM3)

Their third child was born 5 July 1858. She died as an infant in 1859.

Mary Timpson (TM4)

Their fourth child was born 10 July 1860. She died as an infant in 1860.

Fanny Timpson (TM5)

Their fifth child was born 2 November 1861.

Fanny Timpson married Richard Henry Rains on 21 May 1884 at Moulton, Lincolnshire, England.

According to the 1911 census the couple had twelve Rains children as listed below with probable year of birth.

William Henry 1885, Alfred 1887, Robert 1888, Annie Mary 1889, Ada 1893, Ethel Fanny 1894, Hilda May 1895, Emily Sousa 1897, Sarah Jane 1898, Charles 1899, Georgina Rose 1902 and Richard Stanley 1906.

John Timpson (TE4) 1827 – Unknown

John grew up with his sisters and brothers and when he was old enough found employment as an Agricultural Labourer in and around Kings Cliffe and Apethorpe. . Appearing there in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

On 21 July 1851 in St Mary’s Church, Woodnewton John married Alice Saunders. Woodnewton is a parish next door to Apethorpe and both are shown as living there. Alice was the daughter of Thomas Saunders a Labourer but we do not know of her origins.

After the marriage the couple seemingly disappear. There are no signs of them in census, immigration or BDM records.
