{"id":243,"date":"2026-03-25T07:25:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T07:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timpson.nz\/?page_id=243"},"modified":"2026-05-06T08:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T08:00:11","slug":"chapter-seven","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/timpson.nz\/index.php\/chapter-seven\/","title":{"rendered":"W H C Groome \u00b7 The Middle Years \u00b7 1882"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>William Henry Charles Groome (GT1) <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1882 &#8211; 1905<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We know from his children\u2019s birth certificates that William most likely achieved his dream of becoming a full time artist in 1883.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1891 Census taken on 5 April 1891 shows W H C Groome as an \u201cArtist\/Black &amp; White\u201d so at this stage he is primarily a black and white illustrator and we can assume he was working from home. Groome was also an author in his own right and illustrated his own books.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>Cyril The Foundling \u2013 A Tale of the Puritans and Cavaliers. <\/strong>Published 1899.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>His greatest coup as an illustrator was to obtain the contract with \u201cCollins Press\u201d to illustrate the complete works of Charles Dickens whose books had become more popular since his death in 1870.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two examples follow. The Family had now moved again to the desirable address of 78 Coldershaw Road, West Ealing.
