The Timpson Family Story

This is the story of the Timpson family that emigrated to New Zealand from England.

The story starts with Henry Timpson, born 1789 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire. Henry started his early working life as an Agricultural Labourer. Henry met and married Ann Eagle and they went on to have six children.

Their sixth child was also a Henry Timpson born in 1833. Henry also started his working life as an Agricultural Labourer. Younger Henry met and married Ann Wheelband. Henry and Ann went on to have children of their own, moving around the country following work.

Eventually Henry and Ann decided to emigrate with their family to New Zealand.

The story continues in New Zealand with their arrival in the South Island.

Apethorpe Hall

Henry Timpson • 1789

The first Henry Timpson’s in this story. Henry’s life began in Ringstead, Northamptonshire. He met and Ann Eagle and they moved to Apethorpe to begin their life together. Ann and Henry had six children together.

Henry Timpson • 1832

The second Henry Timpson was born in Apethorpe, Northamptonshire. Henry began life as an Agricultural Labourer, like his father. Henry met and married Ann Wheelband and they moved around the area following a series of jobs. Henry and Ann had thirteen children together.

The Langstone Ship

The Voyage Out • 1886

In 1886 Henry and Ann Timpson take their family to New Zealand on a sailing ship called The Langstone. The journey took 96 days and was a real adventure. Their ship, the Langstone, sailed the Clipper Route and arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand in August 1886.

Henry and Ann Timpson start life in New Zealand in Canterbury, Ann’s brother William and his wife Sarah. The established themselves at the Alford Forest Hotel in Canterbury.
